Raising Dion is Netflix’s highly rated series, first aired in 2019. The 10-episode series is based on a short film and comic book of the same name. Unlike other superhero sci-fi stories, Raising Dion is unique in its storytelling perspective. Our hero is widowed mother Nicole as she goes through the trials and tribulations of raising a 7-year-old son that can turn invisible, manipulate plasma and move objects with his mind.
In 2015, before Netflix green-lit Raising Dion, longtime friend, writer, and director Dennis Liu came to Dream Space with a nearly complete short film stylized as a trailer that he had produced as a pitch. There was just something missing from the short that would elevate its fantastical plot: visual effects. Our team stepped up and generated explosions, energy blasts, melting plasma, Invisibility, and glowing orbs of lights–the kind of VFX needed to push the concept over the edge into believable territory.
After its release, the trailer went viral. Both the trailer and comic were commended for its multicultural and interracial perspectives. Dennis Liu’s intentions when creating Raising Dion were to diversify the film industry–and he succeeded. Netflix decided to partner with Dennis to make Raising Dion a reality, and have since even worked on a second season for the popular show. Dream Space is proud to have been able to be a part of this movement.
